Animal protection act passed

Dec 9, 2010 | 5:33 AM

There are stronger penalties now in place for those convicted of animal neglect or animal cruelty.

The government's Animal Protection Act has passed in the legislature introducing fines for those convicted of up to $25,000.

There is simply no need for cruelty, said Bob Bjornerud, the agriculture minister.

The NDP successfully introduced an amendment to the Act to include guide dogs and other service animals.
