Career fair brings groups together

The big question for every high school senior is what to do after graduation.

A career and job fair in Prince Albert is offering students options and information to help them decide.

Students poured into the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre for the all-day Regional Career Fair, on Wednesday.

In the past, different organizations such as the Prince Albert Catholic Schools and the health region, each had their own separate events.

But this year, for the first time organizers partnered up to bring over 50 venders into one show.

Events coordinator Donny Descharler said they hope to double that number by next year.

“We planned a city-wide career fair with seven partners as compared to all the various career fairs we had in the past where we couldn’t reach every sector,” Descharler said.

“So we just decided to do it this way and invite everybody and let everybody know that this is going to be a yearly event.”

The fair is aimed at students in Grades 10 through 12, but Descharler said they've even had interest from elementary school classes.

About 2,900 students are registered to walk through the exhibition center and armory building doors.

“Word of mouth has got around already … we’ve had some schools phoning and asking us if they could come and, absolutely, we invite anyone to come so the numbers will probably rise beyond,” he said.

More than providing a greater number of vendors, combining all the events together makes it easier to organizer, said Descharler.

“It’s easier for us partners because we come together with all of our resources, all of our contacts, which we can combine into one list … that’s who we send out the registration packages to.”

Though the event is geared towards high school students the fair is open to the public so people looking for information on a career or to get a job can apply at the different booths.
