The first snowfall of the year came with a bang last night.
Starting at around 7 p.m., snow began to fall and carried out throughout the entire night.
City crews started up their sand and salting teams and were out by 6 a.m.
Despite forecasts to the contrary, snow collected on the ground as snow continued to fall until around 3 p.m. today.
Police warned people to drive according to conditions since many roads were not yet cleared and towards the evening snow had turned to slush.
“Slow down. Give yourself the five minutes to get where ever you’re going,” said Prince Albert Police Service Sgt. Bill Chow.
“If you’re going to be late you’re going to be late. But if you get into an accident, you’re going to be really late.”
Towing companies around the city reported increased activity as they winched cars out of ditches on streets and highways.
Ambulance crews reminded people to watch for unplowed sidewalks since they posed a slipping hazard.
“You’ll notice sidewalks are equally slippery,” said Lyle Parasiuk with Parkland Ambulance. “That’ll make walking a challenge for those going about their business.”
Snow is anticipated for tonight, along with freezing temperatures. The rest of the week is expected to be sunny.
