Strengthening Families

Jul 17, 2018 | 2:35 PM

Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a new FREE program available in Prince Albert.

This multi-year nationally funded project is intended to empower caregivers and their children, giving them the skills to create healthier and more resilient families.

They become more capable and protective influences on each other, reducing risk and harm.  We are now taking applications/referrals!

  • SFP is an evidence based program that is offered in countries all over the world. Prince Albert Catholic Family Services (CFSPA) is proud to deliver such an effective program and is excited to see the positive impact it will have on our community.
  • SFP is voluntary – families may refer themselves or agencies can help make that connection.
  • SFP is free – transportation, babysitting and a meal are provided at each session.  Families receive incentives for attendance.
  • SFP uses trained facilitators, elders, peer supports and babysitters from our community.
  • SFP provides free opportunities to connect as a family outside of the program. This may include sporting events, community events, tours and cultural activities.

Our families also have access to a Family Wellness Counsellor at their request, dedicated to our participants, with no waiting time. They can utilize this service throughout the program and beyond.

In the program, individuals learn/practice skills around communication, attachment, positive interactions, problem solving and emotional management.

Referred families are interviewed by the SFP team to assess their readiness and determine what barriers may impact participation.

While SFP benefits the whole family, the main participants are the caregiver(s) and one of their children. Typically, this is the relationship that requires some focused attention and assistance. The remaining children of the household would play in a supervised area or attend modified programming as applicable.

Programs are designed for children 6-11 and 12-17. A caregiver is any adult with the responsibility of caring for the children in the home, and is inclusive of multi-generational homes, blended parenting situations, and so on. We aim for 10 families per program.

SFP programs operate for 14 consecutive weeks, one evening a week.  Typically a class is from 5-8pm, and would run as such:

  • 4:45pm Families Arrive
  • 5-6pm Family Meal & games
  • 6-7pm – Caregivers attend a learning session with other caregivers while the child/youth attend a learning session with other referred children/youth
  • 7-8pm – All Caregivers & their Child/Youth reunite for a family session, work on skills together
  • 6-8pm Siblings of participating child/youth remain in childcare services where they do some modified learning, crafts and fun activities
  • 8pm – Families depart

Our first program is scheduled to run from September 26 to December 19.  Other programs will follow January 9 to March 27 and April 3 to June 19. They will be held at various schools throughout the city.

Participants are able to access additional opportunities with SFP in the year following their program such as workshops, guest speakers and family friendly activities, referred to as Booster Sessions.
