Exotic Tahiti

Sep 2, 2014 | 9:29 AM

Put Tahiti on your “bucket list” of destinations and take in the beauty and tranquility of these very special islands in the South Pacific.

Tahiti is truly one of the most exotic destinations in the world. It is known for its incredible white sand beaches, crystalline lagoons and the most spectacular sunsets. The islands are lush green with rolling hills and many secluded waterfalls.

The most popular way to travel is by cruise ship out of Papeete. These cruises explore the many islands and are very affordable. Others fly to Papeete and spend time in one of the many resorts on the islands. This is a great way to learn about the cultural history of the Polynesian people and experience it up-close and personal. These multi-talented people are entertaining to say the least! They are very artistic and musical.

The capital of Tahiti is Papeete. The city is compact and starts at the waterfront. Most locals and tourists walk at an island pace, day and night. There are many stalls of fresh fruit, vegetables and French pastries which gives you a typical overview in the mix of cultures here. It all blends creating a unique lifestyle. The best method of getting around the complete island is in a brightly coloured shuttle van simply known as Le Truck. They are inexpensive compared to taxis and car rentals.

Tahitian black pearls are a wonderful gift but buy in reputable stores as many scammers try to imitate them. These pearls are jewels of the sea and living proof of the purity and perfection found in this underwater paradise.

To explore out of the city of Papeete try a 4WD safari jeep island tour that can gain access to the lush rainforests, waterfalls and archeological sites. These tours are well worth the money!

Travel to the island of Moorea by a thirty- minute ferry ride. This is the island where the people of Tahiti go on vacation! Its jagged peaks and lush greenery is encircled by the deep blue of the ocean.

Moorea is one of the most relaxing and fascinating places you could dream of vacationing. The island only covers fifty one square miles but it is unique in having both white and black sand beaches. I can honestly say the beaches of Moorea can be rated among the world’s finest. Lie on a surf board in Cooks Bay and see the wonderful colors of tropical fish that swim all around you. The sea is a turquoise color and so clear you can stay there for hours soaking up the sunshine and quietness. Do an island tour of Moorea to fully appreciate the markets, Botanical gardens, pineapple factory, local artists and craftsmen. Visit a pearl farm and appreciate how these beautiful pearls are cultivated and made into jewellery. A must see is the Tiki Village for Tahitian dancing and performance art. This can be enjoyed with a delicious dinner of sea food or one of the many buffets of Chinese, Italian, French, Polynesian or American cuisine.

Boro Boro is one of the most famous wedding and honeymoon destinations in the world. Over-the-water bungalows are a standard feature of most Boro Boro resorts. The quality of hotels can range from cheap, basic to very luxurious and expensive places to stay. This island is also known for its turquoise waters and beautiful beaches. It is home to numerous hiking trails, lush palm trees and rolling green hills. The island’s economy is driven almost solely by tourism and has a small population of approximately 8,800 people.

Tahiti is truly unique among the Society Islands. If you want to see and visit paradise then this is the place for you.
