Giving Back to our Community

Nov 2, 2013 | 8:37 AM

The spirit of giving is very much alive at Parkland Ambulance Care.

Like many other businesses, organizations and service clubs, we provide volunteers for many community events. Many times when you see a paramedic at a sporting event such as a Raider Game, Summit Run, Downtown Street Fair, and Relay for Life or Super Senior Day’s at Shoppers Drug Mart, these are volunteers.

Every year hundreds of hours are donated back to our community.

The telecommunications personnel from the Communications Center at Parkland Ambulance also donate their time to community events. But one event, this week’s fall school career fair at the Armories and PA Exhibition, really let our volunteers shine.   Parkland Ambulance Care annually participates in this very large career fair. Hundreds of students are bused to the event to check out various career opportunities. This year our volunteers provided a great interactive display and were awarded with “Best Display.” Great job Brendin, Jenna, Natasha, Eden, Brooke and Matt. These Parkland Ambulance Care Team members provided an awesome display for the students on career opportunities of being a paramedic or an emergency telecommunications specialist.

Our volunteers at any and every event are the greatest.   What will you do to help the community?

There are many groups from a church to service club who are looking for your support. Can you spare a few hours in February?

Then maybe you’d like to be part of the Saskatchewan Winter Games here in Prince Albert. The warm fuzzy feeling is great when you do something to help others. Give it a try!

But what does it take to become a paramedic?   First we look for individuals who are committed to making a difference. It might sound like a cliché but hardworking, dedicated, determined people make great paramedics. Sure you’ll need to seek some training, but your career patch can be a long and very rewarding profession. First there and first to care really sums up the strength of the paramedic. He or she is going work shifts, nights, weekends or holidays but the professional paramedic always needs to be at the top of their game. In the coming weeks, many of Parkland Ambulance Paramedics will head back to school for what is called a primary care upgrade. This upgrade will improve the level of skill they can provide to the public making them better paramedics. But it also looks to the future and the evolving scope where in some communities, paramedics work in changing roles that require extended care on scene or home where transport to hospital may not be required.

The profession of a paramedic is always evolving and the paramedics of Parkland Ambulance are right there learning some exciting new skills and treatments.

Maybe you’d like to find out if the career of a paramedic is right for you. Then call our office 306-953-9800 and ask to come on a ride along. We welcome those interested in learning what it takes to be a paramedic to spend some time with our teams as they care for people in the City and surrounding Health Region.

Want to experience what happens in a very technology orientated and busy wide area communication center? Our communications center will be happy to do the same. Starting November 4 three brand new telecommunications members begin their training at Parkland Ambulance Care. We welcome Betty, Tessa and Danielle to our team and our busy communications center.
