Arrows, Speed, and Superpowers

Jul 31, 2013 | 11:45 AM

I think one thing that people can guess about me is I really like comic book characters.

But, do you know who my two favourite characters are? I mean yeah I’m a fan of Batman and Superman, but when it comes to the lower level executives, I’ve got two real favourites.

They are Blue Beetle, and the Flash.

So of course I’ve been following any and all news about the speedy super-being as it has progressed.

At first there was recently talk about a Flash movie coming out in 2015 after the Batman/Superman team up or versus film.

Now what’s happening though is the CW (Warner Bro’s answer to ABC) is eyeing down pulling together a new Flash TV series.

But here’s how they’re going about it.

Arrow, which some probably remember me berating because of its lack of super powered heroes and villains is now taking a turn for the better.

Since ABC announced its upcoming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, CW execs realized they had to evolve or die with Arrow, and so (thank you) season two will now tie into the Man of Steel universe and super powered heroes and villains will begin to show their glorious faces.
Now here’s where the Flash comes in.

Writers for Arrow have dropped that they are hoping to feature Mr. Wonderful in the ninth episode of season two and continue have him showing up in the series.

Then if all goes well, and many hope it does, they will split him off into a spinoff TV series.

What’s the end game? Well I’ll tell you my pretties!

Basically this is how Warner Bro’s is dealing with the whole Avengers-style team-up origin film glorious piece of work.

They will start to feature some of the lower level heroes in TV series from the Justice League which will lead to the film, and the stars from the TV shows will move into the film in their respective roles.

Get it? Got it! Good.

What does this mean for the previously stated Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle TV series that the CW was considering making? Well in the case of Blue Beetle, I hope a hell of a lot, but when it comes to Wonder Woman they really need to change up their original idea of taking her Amazonian heritage away and go with the original storyline again.

Either way this is a brilliant way to take on the Justice League Paradox which seems to have confused executives for a while.

The best part for them is the first season of Arrow does not become a blunder best be forgotten and swept under the rug but an origin series focusing on character development before throwing in big whoopers to take our attention away like shiny things.

It would have been brilliant if it had all been planned from the start, but it’s still a good move.

I actually recently watched the trailer from Comic-Con and at the end it looks like Black Canary has showed up in Starling City. Many might know Black Canary as Green Arrow’s super powered super heroine love.

Also it teased that he may finally change his name to Green Arrow and I even saw Speedy (Red Arrow) in there too, played by Teen Wolf star Colton Haynes (Jackson Whitmore/Chimera/Beta Wolf).

So, will Arrow actually feature some teases to what happened in Metropolis between Superman and Zod? I really hope so!

And on the note of Superman coming up in 2015, I’ve heard that another Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoelchin (Derek Hale/Alpha Wolf), is being eyed as the newest Batman for the new film. This could be a surprisingly good pick, he is a great actor and he has the very low-level celebrity status which is necessary for a Batman actor.

Oh and as for Arrow, there have been some VERY strong hints that Green Lantern might make an appearance.

If so who will play him?

Speaking on the issue with some like-minded geeks, I recently made the point that Ryan Reynolds may still be a good consideration since a lot of big screen actors are returning to their small screen roots.

See: Kevin Bacon/The Following.

But should he come back after that huge mess that was made of Green Lantern in the movie a few years back? (My other point was that he was way too serious in Deadpool and too goofy in Lantern…whereas if he had switched the type of role he was playing for those characters, they both would have worked beautifully).

I feel like Reynolds was trying to go in a serious direction like Ryan Gosling, but somewhere along the way he got caught up in the goofy/adult humor flicks and now he’s trapped in pigeonhole hell.

So maybe bringing him back will ruin this incarnation of the Green Lantern once again.

In that case is this a reboot? And if so are we going to have to relive the whole Green Lantern origin story again?

So far DC has been tackling the issues with their Justice League set up well, but one misstep along the way and the whole thing is ruined.

P.S. I recently watched the DC Animated Universe film Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, and it was awesome, if you get a chance check it out. It is super bloody though and definitely not for kids.

And now for your youtube amusement I have a great video from the producer who brought us Thomas Jane back as The Punisher in the film short Dirt Laundry.

This film features my favourite Marvel anti-hero Venom, and it’s called Truth In Journalism.

Enjoy the film and I will catch you all soon.
