Boating accident turns fatal

One person drowned last weekend on a lake in Northern Saskatchewan.

RCMP in Wollaston Lake received a call Sunday morning, reporting two people were in a boat in Welcome Bay and were experiencing difficulty staying afloat.

Welcome Bay is the small inlet of water that is surrounded by the Hatchet lake Reserve.

A second call came in reporting that there were now two people swimming in the bay and two young people had come out in a canoe to assist the original two people.

The two distressed boaters hopped into the canoe which caused the canoe to capsize. All four attempted to return to shore, but only three made it back to safety.

The body of an 18-year-old man was pulled from the water by community members. -Efforts to revive him failed. He was later declared dead at the Hatchet Lake Nursing Station.

The 18-year-old is said to be from the Hatchet Lake First Nation.
