Dogs left in Wollaston

The evacuation of Wollaston Lake because of a nearby blaze did not include some 60 dogs in the area.

The SPCA in Prince Albert has been asked to send any extra dog food to help take care of these abandoned animals.

The SPCA is looking at feeding the 60 dogs for the next 10 to 14 days, said Debbie Lehner, executive director of the SPCA.

“We do have some food we could send,” Lehner said.

But, she’s putting the call out to the public as well.

“Were asking the community if they can spare a bag of dry dog food and just drop it off at the shelter and we will be coordinating with fire control a truck to haul it up there.”

Lehner said 20 of the dogs are secured in a compound but the rest are just running free.

She added they hope to ship the food in the next day of two. Transwest Air has offered space in one of the planes to fly the food up at no cost to the SPCA.

The 15 or so people remaining in the community have agreed to look after the animals.
