P.A. powerlifter Aaron Lemoal sets two world records early in his career

Prince Albert’s Aaron Lemoal has only been involved with powerlifting for the past two years, but is already breaking world records.

“Yeah, not bad,” Lemoal said.

At the GPC National/ CPF Western Canadian Powerlifting Championships in Regina over the weekend, Lemoal broke two world records and a Canadian record in the 60 kg class for 18-19 year olds. Lemoal lifted 105 kg in the bench press and 200 kg in the deadlift to set world records. In the squat, Lemoal set the Canadian start with 160 kg. He attempted to break the world record at 172.5 kg but did not complete the squat.

“It was pretty awesome,” Lemoal said. “It was a big accomplishment for me to do. They’re world records, hopefully they’ll stand for a long time.”

Heading into the competition, Lemoal had a pretty good idea he could break the records as he already was in the gym, training with the Prince Albert Iron Addict Powerlifting Club.

“In the gym, I have done all the weights before,” Lemoal said. “But in a competition, it’s always a little bit different. You have three guys judging you. When you’re in the gym, it’s just your buddy telling that’s telling you if you got it or not.”

Lemoal said he learned quite a bit from local powerlifter Mike Martin and his group the Prince Albert Iron Addict Powerlifting Club.

“I’ve been working out with those guys and they’ve been helping me out a lot with training, what to do and how to do it,” Lemoal said. “Lots of people go to the gym, but if you’re powerlifting or body building, it gives you another thing to work towards — as opposed to just going to work out. It gives you a goal. It makes it more of a sport than a hobby.”
