School bus driver not at fault for crash: Police

Nov 23, 2017 | 9:23 AM

The latest traffic incident involving a school bus was no fault of the bus driver after the vehicle collided with a pick-up truck Wednesday.

“There are no charges being laid and I think the other driver …it was just icy road conditions, that’s our understanding,” Robert Bratvold the director of education for the Sask. Rivers School Division told paNOW.

P.A. Police Service reported the crash between the bus and truck happened at the intersection of First Ave. W. and 22nd St. shortly after school was dismissed at 3:30 p.m.

The front of the truck was badly smashed although it appeared the bus, carrying high school students, was not as badly damaged. Bratvold’s understanding was the bus was able to be driven from the accident scene.

“EMS was on site, they checked students as a precaution, there were no obvious injuries, and a back-up bus came and was on site within minutes to take the kids home. Parents were then informed,” Bratvold said.

Police attributed the icy road conditions to the incident and said no criminal charges would be laid.

Prince Albert Police Service spokesperson Alanna Adamko said between 30 and 40 high school kids were on the bus and there was no indication the bus driver was at fault.

“In fact, if there was any blame it would be the truck driver,” Adamko said. “Traffic coming up that hill needs to stop. The bus was on 22nd Street and had right of way.”

She said it was possible a violation ticket could be issued to the truck driver.

This was the second incident involving a school bus this month.

On Nov. 3, emergency crews responded to an unrelated motor vehicle collision involving a car and a school bus operated by Saskatchewan Rivers Public School on the corner of Eighth St. E and Fifth Ave.

The 59-year-old male driver and an eight-year-old female, six-year-old male and 11-year-old female passenger were taken to hospital for further care, all with minor injuries. The two occupants of the car were not injured.

The school bus driver was later ticketed by Prince Albert Police for disobeying a stop sign and an internal investigation was launched.
