Minor injuries after school bus involved in traffic incident

Nov 3, 2017 | 3:56 PM

Friday afternoon, emergency crews responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a car and a school bus on the corner of Eighth St. E and Fifth Ave.

According to paramedics, 44 students were on the bus operated by Saskatchewan Rivers Public School. The bus was transporting students home from Riverside Public School.

Witnesses indicate the bus attempted to stop at a controlled intersection but was unable. It travelled through the intersection, collided tangentially with a car and then went over the curb and collided with a house on the corner of the intersection.

The 59-year-old male driver and an 8-year-old female, 6-year-old male and 11-year-old female passenger were taken to hospital for further care, all with minor injuries. The two occupants of the car were not injured.

Lyle Karasiuk, with Parkland Ambulance, said paramedics remained on scene following the incident to assess students, many of whom were complaining of minor aches and pains.

“The children themselves are shaken up by being jostled around in the bus,” he said. “Our paramedics remained and waited for parents so they could gather their kids and get them home after what might be a very frightening experience for a number of students.”

Karasiuk said the children may have been shaken up a bit as it is Friday and “they are looking forward to the weekend, and not expecting that at any time to be involved in an incident.”

“Obviously the bus driver did his very best to avoid what could have been a terrible tragedy in the city today,” he added.

The investigation remains ongoing.
