P.A. wrap up preseason

Sep 16, 2017 | 9:33 PM

In the final preseason tune-up, the Prince Albert Raiders fell to the Regina Pats 5-1 Saturday at the Art Hauser.

They finished the exhibition games with a 2-3 record, against a Pats team that finished 3-2-0-1.

The Raiders will start playing for keeps on Sept. 22, taking on the Moose Jaw Warriors in the home opener for the 2017-18 WHL regular season.

Raiders overager Devon Skoleski scored the lone goal for the home side in the defeat.

The Raiders quietly picked up Skoleski in the offseason off of waivers from the Everett Silvertips to shore up their overage situation.

For the second straight game, Nicholas Sanders and Max Martin got in preseason action after recovering from their offseason injuries. Both missed all three previous games and the entirety of training camp before getting back into the lineup.

Sanders played the first half of the game, making eight saves on 11 shots.

No Nachbaur

Justin Nachbaur didn’t have the benefit of the Raiders’ final preseason game to try and cement his spot on the team. He was forced to sit after receiving a major penalty for charging in Friday’s 3-2 shootout win over the Pats. Before the game, the WHL confirmed Nachbaur would be suspended for at least Saturday’s contest, and could face additional punishment. Nachbaur played the first four preseason games for the Raiders, scoring a goal on Friday.

Taste of the pros

The Raiders still have four players with NHL teams participating in their training camps. Goaltender Ian Scott is with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vojtech Budik with the Buffalo Sabres, Jordy Stallard with the Winnipeg Jets and Parker Kelly with the Ottawa Senators.

All four teams will begin their preseason with games on Sept. 18. With the Raiders’ regular season beginning on Sept. 22 against the Moose Jaw Warriors, the Raiders will hope to return everybody by then—especially considering that group includes the team’s starting goaltender (Scott), top pair defenceman (Budik) and half of the team’s leadership group (assistant captains Stallard and Kelly).
