Crohn’s drug now reimbursed for Saskatchewan residents

Sep 2, 2017 | 8:56 AM

A drug to help treat Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis is now being reimbursed for Saskatchewanians.

HUMIRA, developed by AbbVie, is a costly medication that helps during the remissions part of the disease.

John McDonald with Crohn’s and Colitis Canada said the drug will help those affected by the disease by giving them a new option.

“There is no cure for Crohn’s and Colitis, so this particular medication keeps you in remissions for a long period of time,” McDonald said. “Announcements like this are really important to people suffering from this disease. It’s great to see governments and provinces taking initiative on treatments such as these.”

McDonald added that while there is no definitive cost of the drug itself as it varies by weight, patients could be saving thousands of dollars per treatment per month.
