Northlands College announces NORTEP/NORPAC student funding

Jul 12, 2017 | 12:57 PM

Northlands College hopes to ease some of the stresses on students by announcing funding for those who are transitioning to their adaptation of the NORTEP/NORPAC program.

At the end of June, the NORTEP/NORPAC program was officially shut down, after it was announced last year the provincial government would no longer be funding the educational institute in La Ronge.

Northlands College will cover the tuition and book costs for students who were previously funded through the NORTEP program. Those entering their fourth year of study will be eligible for a living allowance. Students won’t see many changes in the classrooms either; the same method of instruction in the same schedule will be provided through many of the same instructors.

In a release issued on July 11, the college’s board of directors said they had waited long enough for decisions pertaining to the former NORTEP/NORPAC programs’ apartments, library computers and vehicles.

“Although we have recently been aware of some of the decisions, the Northlands College Board feels the waiting has gone on long enough,” board chair Deborah Charles said. “We hope this reduces the stress [students] have been feeling.”

Charles further stated her concern for the student housing situation, which has not been resolved. She said NORTEP did a good job of providing stable post-secondary housing. She hopes to continue to provide the service going forward, to put the best interest of students first.

Toby Greschner, president and CEO of Northlands, said the college has done everything it can to overcome financial challenges to make the living allowance possible. Without knowing the future of the apartment buildings, he said the college has “gone as far as we can afford to go on student allowances.”

NORTEP/NORPAC vice president Jennifer Malmsten did not provide comment on any of the issues presented by Northlands College.
