Jul 9, 2017 | 11:59 PM

After three periods of stick snapping action, the Prince Albert Trappers came out on top Sunday night with a 6-2 win over the Regina Rush at Kinsmen Arena to be crowned 2017 SLA Bantam Box Provincial Championships.

The team has been tied down with a third a place finish for the past two years which added capital to hoisting the trophy in the front of the hometown crowd.

“It was really nice to sleep in our own beds and play well in front of our hometown fans,” Trappers coach Bryan Swystun said, adding the team’s ability to tally goals early on lent a hand to the win.

“We did it all tournament. We seem to just come out and have very good first periods and get jumps on teams and play very well defensively later on down the stretch in the game, which was the case tonight,” Swystun said.

Dagan Carlson lent a hand to the team’s strong showing out of the gate scoring four back-to-back goals to take them to a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes. He dealt two assists later in the game, landing him the title of bantam tournament M.V.P.

“We shut them down in the third and a lot of credit to the fellas.  They have been on this for a lot of times it is nice for them with all the hard work they put in to come away with the medal this year and gold, so good for them,” Swystun added.

The Trappers were climbed to the top of their after the weekend of play. They had taken on and beaten the Rush in Round Robin play, which Swystun credited to the guys on the team working as one.

“We didn’t play as individuals, it think that is the biggest thing,” he added. “There is 17 of us and it takes all 17 of us and that is exactly what happened. We rolled three lines all the time and it was good.”

The Trappers had a strong weekend, winning their opening game against the Saskatoon Knights 15-3. They also notched a win in both games on Day 2, taking the Swift Current Rampage 6-1 in Round Robin action and securing a 6-4 win over the Moose Jaw Mustangs in the semis to move on to Sunday’s final.
