The man accused of kidnapping a girl from a Prince Albert playground will be back in court next Friday.

Jarrod John Charles, 19, was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly abducting an eight-year-old girl from a playground near Ecole Vickers Public School at roughly 3:30 p.m. and taking her away in his car. According to city police, the girl’s family members left her unattended for a short time while she played on the playground, and she was gone when they returned. The Amber Alert system was activated after the girl’s parents immediately reported her missing, and a large-scale police manhunt scoured the province and city for Charles.

Police announced the girl had been safely located roughlyly six hours after she was reported missing. An hour later, Charles was located by police and arrested. He now faces charges of kidnapping, abduction, forcible confinement, sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and abandoning a child.

Charles made his first appearance yesterday in Prince Albert Provincial Court, and the matter was put over until this morning to give him time to apply for Legal Aid. This morning defence lawyer Rebecca Crookshanks requested the case be adjourned until next Friday for defence elections. Charles did not appear in the courtroom personally, as his appearance was waived.
