Elderly lovebirds tie the knot during ceremony in Rosthern

Family members and friends gathered at the Henry W. Friesen Chapel inside the Pineview Manor in Rosthern on Saturday to witness two of the home’s residents get hitched.

Ulrich Richter, 90, and Susan Neufeld, 82, became the town’s newest couple, tying the knot after less than a year of knowing each other.

“We liked each other very much and we eventually fell in love,” said Ulrich.

The newlyweds first became friends after discovering their rooms were 30 steps around the corner from one another.

According to the home’s Chaplain Amos Fehr, it started off as a mutual friendship before the two confessed their love for one another to him.

“I met Susan and Ulrich about nine or ten months ago when they moved here,” he explained. “[They] became acquaintances and friends and it turned into a romance, and so my role as Chaplain was to do their wedding and it was nothing but a celebration to officiate their wedding.”

“Over the years, I’ve done a lot of weddings for people in their twenty’s and maybe in their thirties,” he continued, adding that they were the oldest couple he’s ever wed. “This was a new experience and it shows that no matter what age, love has no boundaries and love always wins.”

Ulrich was born and raised in Germany and was married previously for 67 years, moving to Canada with his family in 1974, while Susan grew up in the Hague area and was married prior for 52 years. Both were widows before getting married on Saturday.

Susan said that the two already had their first plans in place as a married couple.

“We’re going on our honeymoon first, then we’re going to stay in Pineview and move in together,” she said.

The couple said that they were heading out for their honeymoon directly after the wedding reception, however, they opted to keep the details top secret.

“We’re going away, nobody knows [where],” laughed Susan.
