Treliving makes donation to support softball championship

Boston Pizza Chairman and celebrity businessman Jim Treliving took some time away from the Dragon’s Den set yesterday to visit the Prince Albert franchise and make a major donation.

During their Valentine’s Day promotion, staff at the Prince Albert Boston Pizza location raised more than any other restaurant in Canada. During his congratulatory visit Tuesday, Treliving donated $10,000 to Project Triple-Play, a group fundraising for the 2018 Junior Men’s World Softball Championships in Prince Albert. Representatives from Softball Canada and the World Baseball Softball Confederation were also on hand to thank Treliving for his support.

Treliving said it’s important to him to support the communities that have made his restaurants so successful.

“We believe that we do really well in the communities where we are, and we become part of the community,” Treliving told paNOW. “If a community supports you the way they do in P.A., why not give back?”

Although his donation will help bring world-class softball to Prince Albert, Treliving joked that he hasn’t had a chance to play the sport himself in many years.

“My son is a general manager with the Calgary Flames, so I have to stay on the hockey side,” he said with a laugh, “but I love softball. I grew up with it, and it’s a prairie thing for me.”

Softball Canada President Kevin Quinn said he was very impressed by what he saw when he toured the nearly-complete facilities for the 2018 championships, which Treliving’s donation will help complete.

“It looks fantastic. They’ve done an enormous amount of work on the facilities [and] they’ve done a huge amount of fundraising,” Quinn said. “All these athletes coming from around the world will be treated to a first-class facility.”
