Preds get big ‘W’ over MJ; 2nd still alive

Jun 3, 2017 | 8:00 PM

In their last regular season game at the Kinsmen Arena, the Prince Albert Predators didn’t disappoint their hometown fans after a 14-8 over the Moose Jaw Mustangs.

The win means the Predators could still reach second place in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League standings in the junior division. If they win their two remaining games, or win won and get some help, they will be in second place heading into the playoffs.

It won’t be easy as they’re playing the two Regina teams on the road, the Riot on June 10 and the Rifles on June 11.

“If we stay out of the penalty box against those two teams, we can play with them,” Predators head coach Tyson Fetch said. “I think we’ll come out with at least one win, but I’m hoping for two—we’ll see how tired we are on Sunday.”

Saturday was the second time the Predators beat the Mustangs this year. In their season opener on April 29, the Predators came away with an 8-6 victory in the Friendly City.

The Predators had a 5-1 lead at one point in the first period to start the second matchup between the two clubs, but took their foot off the gas. The Mustangs made it a 5-4 game after the first 20 minutes of play.

But after a quick regroup during the intermission, the Predators played much more consistently afterwards. They shutout the Mustangs 5-0 in the second period and alsdjflkdsajflsd.

“They were only shooting from one position, so if we can predict that, we should be standing there waiting for them,” Fetch said. “That was the big difference. We only gave up six shots [in the second period].”

Ashton Hall had a hat trick to lead the Predators offensively.

Brody Low, Ethan Beaulac and Dillan Cochrane each had a pair of goals.

Lights out

In the first period while killing a penalty, Mustangs defender Garrett Mehler went to clear the ball high but hit one of the Kinsmen Arena’s low-hanging light fixtures instead. This broke the light, causing glass to spread all over the playing surface and causing a short delay.
