Dragons ready to roar in Thursday home opener

May 11, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Even though the Saskatchewan Rivers Dragons haven’t played a high school rugby match yet on Prince Albert soil, they have already piled up a pair of victories.

The Dragons will trot on Max Clunie Field Thursday at 6 p.m. for their home opener against the Saskatoon Wallabies with two wins under their belt—24-17 over the Saskatoon Wallabies and 19-17 over Lashburn Lucky last week.

“We’re feeling pretty good about ourselves with two wins already this year, both on the road,” Dragons coach Paul Roy said. “We’ve got a young team this year, so it’s especially gratifying to see us off to a start like this.”

Out of the 26 members of the Dragons squad, 10 are in Grade 9, 10 are in Grade 12 and only six are in Grades 10 and 11 combined.

“It’s a different team in an age demographic that we’ve never had before,” Roy said, before adding the leadership from the Grade 12s is the team’s biggest strength. “We have two players in Jesse Mourot and Darryl Sanderson who both went to Baltimore last month with Team Sask, and they’ve also been playing provincial rugby with Team Sask. They’ve brought a wealth of lead from the front and grit and smarts to the game.”

Mourot and Loïc Bolay each had two tries in the Dragons’ debut over the Wallabies. Sanderson had a pair of tries, while Ben Myo added one as well in Lashburn.

After Thursday’s home opener, the Dragons are in Saskatoon to take on the All Blacks on Thursday.
