Paint night planned to benefit palliative care

May 5, 2017 | 8:00 AM

An upcoming paint night in Prince Albert is aimed at creating awareness and raising funds for end of life care.

The Prince Albert Parkland Hospice Palliative Care Association (PAPHPCA) host the “Tree of Life – A One and Done Paint Night” the same week as National Palliative Care week. Marj Bodnarchuk, president of the PAPHPCA, said the association was formed in the early 1990s to improve the quality of life for people confronted with a terminal illness.

“The focus is on comfort and quality of life no matter what the terminal illness is from.…We pursue education and innovation of treatments and practices that will bring comfort and hopefully pain free time for these individuals,” Bodnarchuk said.

Pallative care is based on a holistic care approach that focuses at the individual’s mind, body and spirit. She said it requires knowledge how to most effectively heal symptoms.

“We have a lot of physicians in Prince Albert who do a very good job…taking care of the pain. But there’s all sorts of other problems that come along with a terminal illness and some of them are dietary issues, some are pharmaceutical side issues,” Bodnarchuk said.

Basic care for patients and maintaining the most optimal quality of life is what, she said, the association strives for.

Funds raised at the event go towards things like equipment which can be used for pain control. Also benefitting, Bodnarchuk said, is the Healing Hurting Hearts Camp in the Christopher Lake area. The camp is for kids who have lost a family member or close friend and teaches kids how to deal with their grief and eventually move forward.

The paint night May 12 will be held at the Victoria Square Compounding Pharmacy from 7 to 10 p.m. Attendees are asked to enter through the My Place Bistro Doors. Tickets to the event are $50 per person and include art supplies and catering. Wine and beverages will be available for purchase.
