Business owners, city hall pitching in

Apr 27, 2017 | 4:33 PM

Prince Albert business owners and city hall staff chipped in their time for Pitch-In week.

A handful of people donned blue gloves and grabbed some bright yellow garbage bags to pick up trash in the downtown area.

“The city has always participated in some capacity for Pitch-In week,” the city’s communications coordinator Kiley Bear said. “I think it’s a really good community pride initiative.”

Bear said groups have always come forward “to do their part,” once the city makes the call for Pitch-In week, which is celebrating 50 years in Canada this year.

Groups were out for three hours, collecting trash, which was eventually collected by sanitation crews according to Bear. The city also provided the bags and gloves required for the clean-up.

The initial downtown clean-up was supposed to occur on April 25 but it was delayed until April 27 due to weather according to Todd Sander, a local franchisee for the Marquis Rd. Tim Hortons.

He and his wife Cheryl have participated in Pitch-In week prior to owning his business.

“This is something we do every year,” Sander said. “Before, it was with the Girl Guides…. It’s nice to show up and help out.”

The city clean-up is a family affair; Sander was cleaning the streets with his father-in-law Ed Zaparaniuk, who owns other Tim Hortons locations in Prince Albert.

Mayor Greg Dionne said he thought the city clean-up was a “great event.”

“This is citizens taking care of their own community, and they’re coming out in droves to help clean-up the city,” Dionne said. “When you go past a piece of garbage, pick it up.”
