From farm to table: Ag Ed inspires students

Apr 26, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Seven hundred students from various schools from the Prince Albert area are learning about agriculture and farm safety in an annual event at the exhibition centre.

Glen Duck, Executive Director for the Saskatchewan Association for Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions, said the children will hear about poultry, bees, sheep, electrical and chemical safety among other topics.

“The biggest thing is they just need to be aware of what’s going on around them when it comes to safety …and when we talk about agriculture …where their food comes from,” he said.

Prince Albert Exhibition Director, Tara Kennedy added a lot of kids don’t have exposure to the farm anymore and it is important for them to know where their food comes from.

“It’s not from a grocery store. There are farmers working out there every day to provide them with food,” she said.

Grade 4 student Stefan Lotz had a heavy arm after churning a tube of cream into butter by hand while listening to various presenters.

“I might serve it to my family with supper tonight,” he said. Lotz admitted his favorite presentation was about the sheep which he described as “soft and fluffy” but said the most important information he heard about had to do with tractor safety.

“You have to stay away from the spinning things behind the tractor so you don’t lose a finger or get injured,” he explained.

Organziers of the Ag Ed Showcase said they hope to inspire the next generation to care about food and the farmers who grow it.
