Bears get Slashed, fall to 1-3 at Esso Cup

Apr 26, 2017 | 1:20 PM

The Prince Albert Northern Bears couldn’t take down the only undefeated team at the Esso Cup national female Midget AAA hockey championships. The Bears (1-3) fell 4-0 to the St. Albert Slash from Alberta (4-0) Wednesday in Morden, Man.

The Bears started the day tied for fourth place with the Durham West Lightning from Ontario (1-2). The Bears will hope a victory over les Harfangs du Triolet from Quebec Thursday at 2:30 p.m. will be enough to crack into the top four and make the playoffs.

Scoring

The Slash got off to a quick start, as they scored 1:43 into the first period after some miscommunication on the side of the Bears’ goal.

The Slash passed around the biscuit around on the power play midway through the opening frame, with Tyra Meropoulis giving the Slash a 2-0 lead.

In the sandwich stanza, Kaylee Vader scored a goal worthy of the highlight reel to extend the Slash’s lead to 3-0.

The Slash added one more with 1:03 remaining in the game, with Isabelle Lajoie scoring on a breakaway.

The Bears will wrap up the group stages with a game against les Harfangs du Triolet from Quebec Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Playoffs start on Friday, with the medal games taking place on Saturday.
