Leslie Black dangerous offender hearing delayed until June

Apr 21, 2017 | 12:00 PM

The dangerous offender hearing for a man guilty of a vicious attempted murder will not conclude until mid-summer.

Leslie Ivan Black pleaded guilty to assaulting Marlene Bird in 2014. Black beat and sexually assaulted Bird before lighting her on fire, leading to the amputation of both her legs and the loss of much of her eyesight.

The hearing to determine whether Black will be designated as a dangerous offender, which could lead to his indefinite incarceration, has been running since March 13 in Prince Albert’s Provincial Court.

Although all the evidence in the case has been presented, the matter was delayed today in order to give both sides time to prepare their final arguments and written briefs. The arguments will be heard in court June 30.
