Forest fire under control

May 20, 2011 | 5:50 PM

Two days after it was first detected, the wildfire southwest of Prince Albert is now listed as controlled.

The Ministry of Environment downgraded the status late Friday afternoon. Brent Krayetski, provincial wild land fire coordinator with the ministry said the decision came from their people on the ground.

“The incident commander feels confident they can list it that way and the fire isn’t expected to breach the containment lines,” he said.

The Nisbet Provincial Forest near MacDowall and Highway 11, caught fire Wednesday afternoon and the fire burned an estimated 134 hectares before crews were able to get a containment line around it.

Work will continue over the weekend said, Krayetski.

“(Firefighters) will be looking for hot spots along the line and they’ll be working their way in to facilitate a full extinguishment on that fire,” he said.

“Because the fire is in the high response zone we will make be scanning the fire area and making sure it’s completely out before leaving the scene.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, however earlier in the week the ministry suspected human activity was at fault.

“We do believe the fire is from human activity,” said Jeanette Krayetski, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Environment, who explained there had not been any lightning strikes at the time of ignition.
