Raiders run out of steam against Pats

Jan 15, 2017 | 5:50 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders ran out of steam in the third period Sunday afternoon in a 5-1 defeat to the Regina Pats at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Pats (first in CHL, 29-5-6-1) also beat the Raiders (8-32-3-2) in a wacky 7-6 overtime game on Saturday in Regina.

For the Raiders it was their third game in as many nights, and their fourth game in the last five days.

It was a 1-1 game midway through the second period, before the Pats ran away with it late.

The Pats scored twice in the second to lead 3-1 heading into the third period, then scored another two just eight seconds apart for the 5-1 victory.

“We were right there,” Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said. “In the second period, we had a breakaway missed, they came back and scored. It could’ve been 2-1 in our favour, but it was 2-1 in their favour. In the second period, we were there.”

Former Raiders draft pick Connor Hobbs had a pair of goals for the Pats. Sam Steel had a goal and two helpers.

The Raiders got their only goal from rookie Spencer Moe after a gorgeous feed from fellow 16-year-old rookie Cole Fonstad. Moe also scored in Saturday’s matchup and now has five goals and 10 points on the season.

“Those guys are playing well but you can’t get ahead of yourself and all of a sudden match them against [Adam] Brooks because that’s just unfair,” Habscheid said. “We still have to be careful with them and put them in positions where they can have some success. You can tell they’re playing pretty good and have some good confidence.”

Infirmary filling up

The Raiders now have three forwards on their injury list. Captain Tim Vanstone is the latest addition, and was hit by Sergey Zborovskiy in Saturday’s match up. Simon Stransky couldn’t continue after getting hit at his own blue line Friday against the Red Deer Rebels. Drew Warkentine broke his finger Dec. 27 against the Saskatoon Blades.

Another busy week

Sunday’s game capped off a three-games-in-three-nights stretch for the Raiders. After a few days off, the Raiders will put some miles on the bus by taking on the Kootenay ICE on Wednesday before another three-in-three in Red Deer Friday, Edmonton Saturday and Calgary Sunday.

The Raiders have a total of 15 games in the month of January, including three consecutive three-games-in-three-night weekends.

“I’ve been in this league for a while, I’ve never had that many games in one month,” Habscheid said. “Now we’ve got some injuries so we just have a piece of adversity we have to find a way to battle  through.”
