Raiders’ Jerome ready to prove Rebels wrong

Jan 12, 2017 | 4:00 PM

D-Jay Jerome is coming into Friday’s game with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove.

Since coming to the Prince Raiders in a Dec. 28 trade involving the move of 20-year-old Austin Glover, Jerome will get his first crack at his former team, the Red Deer Rebels on Friday at the Art Hauser Centre.

High on his priority list will be to show Rebels general manager, head coach Brent Sutter made a mistake in letting Jerome go.

“I got to show him that he was wrong for trading me,” Jerome said. “I mean, I know he’s a good coach and everything, but I just have to prove him wrong. That’s what I have to do.

“I’ve got friends [on the Rebels] but there will be no friends tomorrow.”

Jerome said the transition to the Raiders has been a refreshing one and a big chance from a more rigid Rebels’ room.

“It’s a totally different atmosphere here, the boys are awesome. It’s like I’m playing hockey again,” Jerome said. “It’s not just fighting against everyone. It’s nice to have people on your side. It’s awesome.”

Spending most of his time on the fourth line, Jerome has one assist in six games with the Raiders. Jerome started off the season hot for the Rebels, scoring four goals in his first four WHL career games. The 17-year-old scored one goal since and is determined to returning to his excellent early-season form.

“It’s all confidence. I was coming in off a good summer and good training. I was ready to go. I just have to get that back again,” Jerome said. “I gotta make things happen, I gotta put pucks in the net and make sure I’m helping people put pucks in the net.

“I just gotta make things happen in the defensive zone as well, making the D-zone just as important.”

Glover will be playing his first game in the Art Hauser Centre with his new Rebels side. Matthew Campese, the son of former Raiders general manager Bruno Campese, is also on the Rebels side.
