UPDATE: Lang keeps seat as Melfort mayor

Oct 26, 2016 | 11:24 PM

Melfort’s incumbent mayor handily maintained his seat after the votes were counted Wednesday night.

With 866 votes earned out of a possible 1551, Rick Lang received more than half the support of Saskatchewan’s smallest city.

“I’m grateful for all of the people that supported me, for sure,” he said.

Around the council table, Lang will be joined by April Phillips, Doug Terry, Tim Hoenmans, Darryl Benson, Trent Mitchell and Glenn George. Each council candidate won with over 700 votes.

Lang said he had made some tough decisions as mayor, but always believed he was doing what was best for the city. He thought the election results showed voters felt the same way.

Lang is looking forward to the next four years. The first thing on his agenda is to attach a new health wellness centre to the existing hospital, something he’s been working on since first elected.

The mayor planned more upgrades to the city’s infrastructure and would make sure the construction plans have minimal impact to the tax payers.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to do all of that while still keeping tax increases to a fairly reasonable level,” he said.

Both school board candidates, Randy Ariss and Todd Goudy were acclaimed in the election.

Voter turnout saw a decline this year when compared to the most recent municipal election in 2012. This year’s turnout was 37 per cent, a drop from the 50 per cent from four years ago. The highest the turnout rate was in the last seven elections was 52 per cent in 2006.
