UPDATE: Astrouski with a couple of ‘Ginos’ in Raiders’ intra-squads

Aug 30, 2016 | 9:22 PM

Gino Astrouski got into one game with the Prince Albert Raiders last year in his 16-year-old season. His aim is to make sure that’s not his last.

Astrouski made a strong case for that in the Raiders annual Green and White Game to wrap up their training camp Tuesday at the Art Hauser Centre. He scored twice and added an assist as his Team White side beat Team Green 6-5.

For the first time this camp, Astrouski got to suit up in full Raiders garb, instead of the single-colour practice jerseys handed out during the camp scrimmages. That may seem like a small detail to some, but for Astrouski, it signifies a lot more than that.

“It’s the best time, to wear this jersey,” Astrouski said. “I’m playing with the best team in this league. I’m really proud to wear this jersey and play for this team.

“So many emotions in my body when I put on this jersey and play for the team.”

He got to wear the jersey once last year in a regular season game against the Saskatoon Blades back on March 19 at the SaskTel Centre—the final game of the regular season.

Seeing as the Raiders already had home ice advantage locked up, the game meant very little to them in terms of standings and were already looking to the playoffs. Astrouski recalls that day a little bit differently.

“It was probably the best game of my life,” Astrouski said. “It was in Saskatoon, there was like 9,000 people there. There was lots of emotion playing for the Raiders. I’ll remember that day for the rest of my life.”

Astrouski was a 10th round pick by the Raiders in the 2015 draft despite being a 15-year-old forward out of the Edmonton South Side Athletic Club.
