Blocking and jamming to kick off the weekend with local roller derby league

The Outlaws from the city’s roller derby league worked hard to prepare for their first game, which kicks off the season this Saturday, April 30.

Sandy Elsaesser, the team’s inter-league representative, said members began practicing for the season at the beginning of February. To beef up skills, Elsaesser said the league sent a couple of senior players to a boot camp in Regina, which they came back from with more pointers for fellow teammates.

“We’re working on refreshing our basic skills, blocking skills as far as being able to block the tricky jammer,” she said. “We’ve been playing a lot of scenarios, what are we going to do if this happens, especially for the players that don’t have as much experience as us senior players.”

The game consists of five players from each team: four blockers and one jammer. The goal for the jammer to make it all the way around the track without being blocked by the other team. Elsaesser said although the game is a full contact sport, there are strict rules to ensure everyone plays safe and has fun.

The sport can be played by anyone, whether you know how to skate or not, Elsaesser said. She encourages everyone to come out and give it a try and guarantees someone who attempts the sport, probably won’t be able to get enough of it.

“Don’t think that you can’t do it,” she said. “We have one girl who literally could not even stand on her skates when she started… she never gave up and it just goes to show you that anybody can play roller derby.”

The Outlaws will host Kindersley this Saturday in their season home opener at St. Louis Arena.
