Montreal Lake band manager to go to trial

Montreal Lake Cree Nation’s band manager will return to court this fall.

In Prince Albert Provincial Court today, April 21, Mark D’Amato’s defense lawyer Neil Rass entered not guilty pleas on behalf of his client to charges including assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats.

The charges stem from a Jan. 27 incident at D’Amato’s house in the Rural Municipality of Buckland.

D’Amato remains employed at Montreal Lake.

He previously worked for the bands at Cumberland House and Black Lake.

This is D’Amato’s second high-profile court case. In 2007 he sued the federal government over his three suspensions from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs over allegations of misconduct between 2004 and 2005. The allegations against him were never proven and he won his case.

D’Amato’s trial is set for Sept. 9 at Prince Albert Provincial Court.
