Graduating doesn’t have to break the bank at Wesmor

“Model student” has a different meaning at Wesmor School.

Five graduating Grade 12 students took a walk down the runway today in Wesmor Community High School’s 4th annual Walks the Walk grad fashion show. The students modeled grad dresses for sale at $25 each and shoes for only $10 at the school.

The money raised goes towards Children’s Haven which Wesmor’s Vice-Principal Jennie Green said has an important connection to the school.

“It helps not only our students but it also helps the very young, the very vulnerable, who are in our schools, who we do educate,” Green said. “So for us that’s really important.”

“That’s the thing that means the most to me,” model Shanelle Nunweiler said. “That it’s going to help the ones (that need) it most.”

Wesmor students had first pick of the dresses but students from other high schools were welcome to attend the event.

The gowns sold are donated from Sears and surrounding communities like La Loche and Montreal Lake which support the fashion show every year.

“A graduation can cost up to $1,000,” Green said. “And I think, before we had this program, a lot of girls and students thought ‘you know what, I can’t afford something like that’ and it just didn’t feel very special and so for them. It’s their time to shine.”
