P.A. area couple to receive bravery medals

Feb 11, 2016 | 5:32 AM

A local couple is being recognized for an act of bravery that saved three people from certain death.

Terry and Rhonda Roach are being awarded a bronze medal by the Royal Canadian Humane Association for the events that transpired the morning of Nov. 6, 2015.

The pair were on their way to work when they came upon a crash on Highway 2 North. A truck and a semi had collided, causing the truck to catch on fire.

“I do remember being worried about what I would see, but we opened the door (to the truck) and you could tell they were just coming to and kind of moaning and they started to cry,” Rhonda said.

Along with the help of the semi-driver, the couple pulled the three people out of the truck and dragged them to the side of the road.

“We moved them not once, but twice from the flames because the wind was coming just from the right direction. It was blowing right over our heads so there was, like, sparks and whatever else. You know, you almost thought your hair was going to start on fire,” she said.

Moments later, the truck exploded and was completely engulfed into flames.

After their heroics had been reported, the couple received praise from neighbours and friends.

The Classic Cruisers Car Club, which they are members of, presented the couple with a cake.

They were also invited to the Buckland Fire Department Christmas Party where they were presented with a specially engraved axe. It was engraved with the words “proud of people who help their fellow man.”

Buckland Fire Chief Jim Miller said the volunteer fire department wanted to show their appreciation for the couple.

“There are people now in this day and age who either don’t take the time or are afraid to try and help someone. You know, you’ll see a vehicle by the side of the road and very few people will stop to see what the problem is,” Miller said.

Rhonda said she feels overwhelmed and proud to receive the bravery medal.

“You just hope that other people would do the same thing, but it feels pretty good,” she said.

The driver of the semi, Mervin Roode, will also receive a bravery medal.

The ceremony in Regina will be held at Government House in October.
