Bystanders rush to rescue crash victims

Nov 6, 2015 | 2:11 PM

A dramatic scene ensued north of Prince Albert Friday morning when a half-ton truck ran into the back of a semi-trailer on Highway 2 north.

When Rhonda and Terry Roach drove up to the scene, they could see the truck wedged into the back of the semi.  They pulled over, put on their flashers, and approached the truck on foot.

“When I first got to the vehicle I wasn’t sure what I was going to find because it was pretty bad,” said Roach. “I thought I’d be seeing more, but they were moving so I thought we were okay.”

Roach said when she and her husband pulled the doors open, the three people inside were screaming and crying.  The man on the passenger side was trapped.  Together with the help of the semi-truck driver, Rhonda and Terry were able to pull two men and a woman to safety at the side of the road.

Shortly thereafter, the truck was completely engulfed in flames.

“And then we ended up having to move them again because the flames got bigger and the tires were exploding,” said Roach.

To make matters even worse, the wind was picking up.   Rhonda and Terry moved the three people a third time to get out of harm’s way.

Parkland Ambulance showed up soon after and transported the three people to hospital, where they were listed in good and stable condition.

“I’m still on adrenaline and it’s crazy how a person reacts, I don’t how I had the energy to lift them,” said Roach.

The RCMP is investigating the cause of the crash.

Roach said she knows from experience that the section of road near the gravel pits is a dangerous area because big trucks are constantly stopping and turning.

At the end of the day she said she is just glad no one was seriously hurt.

“Hopefully someday, someone will do that for someone else,” she said.
