Big Brothers, Big Sisters recruiting new mentors

Jan 20, 2016 | 5:52 AM

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Albert and District has launched a new campaign that aims to recruit new mentors.

The Jump into January campaign aims to find matches for the 31 children currently on their waiting list.

Natasha Thomson, the Prince Albert and district Big Brother, Big Sister new development coordinator said they are searching for volunteers that are willing to help make a difference.

“We need adults who are willing to spend a couple of hours a week with a child,” said Thomson. “When we match a child with a mentor, it helps the child, it helps the mentor and it has really long term positive outcomes for the whole community.”

Thomson said Jump into January is an invitation for the people of Prince Albert to start the New Year off in a healthy, positive way.

“At the beginning of the New Year people are looking for some positive changes that they might want to make or someway that they can make the world a better place,” said Thomson.  “And that is what Jump into January is all about.”

Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister involves only two or three hours a week and at least a one year commitment. An in-school mentorship program, which involves less time of approximately one hour per week, is also available.

“We want as many children as possible to benefit from what mentoring can do,” said Thomson. “We would love to have a bunch of new volunteers because some of those children have been waiting a long time.”

If you are interested in becoming a mentor you can contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Albert at 922-1299. You can also check out their website by clicking here.

New leadership

Big Brothers Big Sisters in Prince Albert recently gained a few new staff members.

Natasha Thomson is the organizations newest developmental coordinator and another new recruit, Angela Powder, was hired on as the organizations newest case worker.

Both Thomson and Powder began working for the organization one month ago. They are taking over after the past marketing and special events coordinator, Allison Wall, left the organization to pursue other things in August.
