Prairie Women on Snowmobiles rev up for breast cancer awareness

Jan 17, 2016 | 7:10 AM

Ten women are going on a six day mission to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

Prairie Women on Snowmobiles (PWOS) have been going on cross-Saskatchewan missions for years, and they aren’t planning on stopping in 2016. The mission takes a handful of women on a 1,400 km ride in 6 days, all the way from Prince Albert to Broadview.

PWOS is an annual event held in awareness for both breast cancer and safe snowmobiling practices. This year marks their fifteenth mission to date. Last year a little over $130,000 was raised, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society. Over the years they have raised and donated over 2.3 million.

However, the organization believes that raising proceeds is not the most important part of what they do.

“We think that if we can save one life with getting our message out there, that early detection of breast cancer is the key, that’s worth more than a million dollars we that we could ever even hope to raise,” said PWOS’s President Carol Lueken.

The dedicated volunteers of Prairie Women on Snowmobiles believe in a singular mission, to help in any way they can to find a cure for breast cancer.

“It’s more the awareness we’re trying to bring and promote safe snowmobiling at the same time. In our minds early detection is the key and its worth more than any amount of money that we could raise for our research or the equipment that is needed,” said Lueken.

This year, one of the ten riders include breast cancer survivor Kelly Kim Rea. Kelly is a survivor of 21 years and now rides for her brother Dennis who is currently fighting his own battle with cancer.

“I don’t think there’s anybody in this province that hasn’t been affected by, in some way or another, family friend or acquaintance that has been affected, the dreaded disease” said Lueken.

The 10 ladies will leave Prince Albert on January 31st and end up in Broadview on February 5th. The 2016 mission will start with a banquet kick off on the 30th at the Prince Albert Travelodge. The banquet will have a roast beef supper, auctions, and a diamond dig for a $3000 neckless.

Tickets are already available.
