Crusaders get new coach

Nov 30, 2015 | 5:45 AM

The Carlton Crusader Senior A Boys basketball team has a new coach.

Coach Cory Britton first started coaching when he was on his internship in Regina.

“I was at a school and a lot of kids were interested in playing the sport, but nobody was interested in providing that opportunity for the kids,” said Britton. “So I stepped up and got involved with a friend that was a teacher at the school and had such a great time with him, I enjoyed the sport immensely, and I enjoyed the opportunity to work with the kids. I was hooked and that was around 17 or 18 years ago.”

Coach Britton switched careers and is working with the young offenders right now, which brought him to Prince Albert.

“I came to P.A. for work I switched careers and I am working with the young offenders right now and have always loved coaching. As a person I have always believed you have to give something back in life,” Britton said.

Grade 12 guard/forward Cole Lindsay who’s one of three returning players was impressed by his new coach.

“My first impression of coach Britton was a guy who demands respect, but also gives respect just as much. He’s really dialled into this team and the players have been responding to it well. We all believe in his philosophy and he believes in us,” Lindsay said.

Britton’s coaching philosophy is for all of his players to have personal excellence.

“I guess my philosophy is personal excellence, whatever that may be for you. Like I said I’ve coached from inner city kids where you’re providing structure and the game is a way to build character. All the way to kids who are exploring post secondary options in basketball so I think my philosophy is just about giving kids the best possible experience to make the most out of what basketball can do for them,” said Britton

The Senior A Boys basketball team is having their home tournament on Dec. 4 and Dec. 5.
