P.A. students walk to promote safety and physical fitness

In celebration of International Walk to School Day, students and teachers from St. John Community School in Prince Albert participated in an early morning walk on Wednesday.

Approximately 95 students from Pre-K to Grade 8, participated in the event that began at 8 a.m. near the river bank and 15th Ave E. The students walked together for a few blocks until they reached their school gymnasium where they got to enjoy a nutritional breakfast before classes began.

Sheila Georget, elementary school co-ordinator for St. John Community School, and organizer of this year’s walk, said this is the second year students and staff have organized and participated in the walk. She said the goal behind the walk is to build participation amongst the students and promote safety and physical activity.

“I think that research shows that a lot of students are not as physically active as they should be, so having this event is inclusive for all students to be able to join us and have participation and physical activity,” said Georget. “A lot of our students ride the bus to school so this is a good day for students to actually walk to school with their friends and realize that this is a safe community to walk in and once again just encourage physical activity for all students.”
