Harvest progressing slowly in the Prince Albert and Melfort areas

Sep 24, 2015 | 1:26 PM

Farmers in the northeast are in need of warm, dry weather.

Harvest was slowed this past week due to rainy and cold conditions.

According to this week’s crop report from Saskatchewan Agriculture, 34 per cent of 2015 crops are now in the bin.  This represents a five per cent jump from the previous week.  Only the northwest is further behind, at 24 per cent.

Provincially, 60 per cent of the crop is in the bin, with producers in the southwest the furthest along at 81 per cent.

How wet was it?

Rainfall this past week ranged from 10mm in the Humboldt area to 48mm in the Nipawin area.

Cropland topsoil moisture conditions are rated as 42 per cent surplus, 54 per cent adequate and four per cent short.

Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 19 per cent surplus and 81 per cent adequate.

The recent rainfall and strong winds have caused significant lodging and there are many reports of sprouting, bleaching and staining in cereal crops in the area.

Ten per cent of the pasture is reported to be in excellent condition, while 61 per cent is in good condition, 25 per cent fair and four per cent in poor condition.

Crop damage this past week was mainly attributed to rain, wind and flooding.
