Three medals for Lehner at Western Canada Games

Aug 13, 2015 | 6:15 AM

Although she didn’t achieve any personal bests, Katelyn Lehner is bringing home three medals from the Western Canada Games.

The 20-year-old from Prince Albert says she’s happy to finish the last competition of the season, but is not “super-duper” satisfied about her personal results.

“It’s either going to be really great because you’ve been training hard for the whole summer season or it can go not as great because you’ve been training hard for the last 11 months and your body is a little worn down,” said Lehner.

Despite the long season Lehner won a silver medal in long jump, and gold medals in the 100 meter and heptathlon.

Lehner has been competing in the heptathlon for several years and considers it her main event. She placed sixth in the event at the 2013 Pan. American Games in Columbia.

“It’s a little tricky when it comes to training sometimes because you do have seven events you have to train for. We try to spend lots of time on the speed and power events. We do lots of hurdles and lots of jumping. You try to fit at least three events into a practice a day,” Lehner said.

The heptathlon took place over the course of two days and includes the 100 meter hurdle, high jump, shotput, javelin, long jump, and the 200 and 800 meter dash.

Lehner was hoping to beat her best score of 4,926 at the Western Games but she fell short of a new personal best with a score of 4,723.

One of her best performances this week was in the 800 meter dash. Lehner was able to start strong and set the pace for the entire race, she said.

Trying to recollect what was going through her mind during the race she said, “The gun goes, you start running, and you push through as hard as you can to the finish.”

“I like to try to split the race up and not look at the full 800 meters … I split it up like that in my mind so it doesn’t seem so bad,” she added.

Lehner gives credit to the rest of the team and supporters for helping her finish strong.

“The team was supportive and there were people pretty much at every corner of the track yelling at me. It was great to have a supportive team behind me to bring me through to the finish line at the end.”

Team Saskatchewan is currently in third place in total medal standings behind Albert and British Columbia.

The team has been able to rack up 102 total medals (47 bronze, 36 silver, and 19 gold) throughout the games.

The games run until Sunday, Aug.  16.
