Competitors waiting to be called into the ring (4H Comp1)

Jul 30, 2015 | 6:40 AM

This week make sure you check out the 4-H Club competition when going to the Prince Albert Exhibition.

You will see future leaders and mentors as they compete daily in a four day competition showcasing the best of what Northwestern 4-H clubs have to offer.

Equine Elite leader and parent Roberta Sinclair said the great thing about being both a leader and a parent is how she can watch her two daughters grow and mature in to amazing people.

“Participating in a 4-H club teaches kids responsibility and motivation. It also teaches children how to speak publicly and to learn by doing.”

Club Director Derrick Miller said he loves seeing the kids learn and then teach others and continuing the cycle of stewardship and accountability.

Miller is so loved by the members that he routinely gets told he can’t quit because then the kids wouldn’t be able to participate.

Competitor Alexie Beaulac said she gets a lot of questions from others about her pet horse.

“Cowboy isn’t a pet, he’s my partner,” she said.

When asked about why be a member of a 4-H Club she replied candidly.

“It’s really a program about leadership and growth. When you start at five or six you learn about animals, for us it’s horses. As you get older you learn more and then you learn how to teach the newer members coming in behind you.”

Beaulac and Cowboy placed in three events they competed in, two firsts in Bareback Horsemanship and the Toonie race and third in Showmanship.
