Judge rules in favour of local woman

Jul 23, 2015 | 6:23 AM

A Prince Albert woman won’t have to worry about the well-being of her birds anymore.

On July 13 a provincial court judge ruled Gail Sakamoto was not guilty of breaking a bylaw prohibiting the feeding of wild birds within city limits.

Sakamoto rescued two of her 14 pigeons after they became injured and nursed them back to health, she said “they became part of the family.” The rest of the birds were raised from hatchlings.

Sakamoto was issued a ticket earlier this year in April.

“I believed and still believe it has nothing to do with the birds,” Sakamoto said about the complaints.

Sakamoto said the support of the community was uplifting and helped relieve some of the stress the complaints have caused.

“People have been very supportive of me. Because of the stress, I’ve lost over thirty pounds because of this. I am still not sure this is over yet. I hope what the judge said in the courtroom will put an end to it finally.”

A spokesperson for the city informed paNOW that the city was waiting for a written decision, and once provided, would give consideration to the decision and take appropriate steps if required.
