Henry wins Men’s Lobstick

Jun 13, 2015 | 5:09 PM

“It feels good.”

The 2015 Lobstick Men’s championship flyte match-play champion was lost for words moments after winning the title.

Prince Albert’s Brett Henry struggled early, but won the battle of the young guns by getting on a roll midway through the match to defeat Kyle Wiebe on the 17th hole.

The 22-year-old stalwart of Cooke Municipal Golf Course had to chip out after a bad tee shot on Number 1 and three-putted the second after missing an eight-foot putt for birdie and was two down after just two holes. Henry was upset after the next tee shot but recovered and started chipping away at Wiebe’s lead. He gained a shot back when Wiebe missed a short putt for par on the fourth hole and tied the match with a birdie on five.

Henry says there was no defining moment in the comeback.

“I just tried to hit good shots because it’s match play, if you lose one hole, you can double or triple (bogey) and it doesn’t really matter.” said Henry who started to zero in on his putter. “I was just hoping to make a couple of putts just to get something going.”

Henry started to pull away with wins on nine, 10, 12 and 13 to open a three-hole lead but never felt comfortable.

“Not really, no, I knew it was going to be a tough match all the way through.”

Wiebe, the 19-year-old tournament rookie, felt the match slipped away because of mistakes.

“The first eight holes I felt like I hit the ball well, just din’t get the breaks on the greens, which could have put me up a little more,” said Wiebe. The Madison native agreed match ultimately was determined early on the back nine.

“The rough patch in the middle (of the round), some tee shots and some shoddy ball striking that ended up costing me. The wind played a factor and I tried to bounce back but just came up short.”

Although disppointed with his play in the final, Wiebe is extremely happy with his overall tournament performance.

“I played solid all week. I was around even par every match, pretty much played steady, maybe two birdies and one bogey per round, steady golf will win out here.”

In addition to upsetting defending champion Greg Swenson of Prince Albert in the semifinals, Wiebe beat former champion Warren Gnam, Shawn Streleau and Brandon Kuse. Henry’s road to the final included wins over Taylor Afseth a former Lobstick Junior champion and 2014 winner of the Northern Men’s Amateur title in the semifinals. He also beat Open winner Shaun Dunphy, Russel Robson and Jock Kriegler.
