Change at Sask. long-term care facilities slow but coming

May 27, 2015 | 12:18 PM

The Government of Saskatchewan is giving the public a look at what’s working and what’s not working at long-term care facilities in the province.

On Wednesday, the ministry of health posted the results of the 2014 CEO tours throughout the province. It’s the second year the ministry has had health region CEOs visit the facilities to hear from staff and residents about the conditions. It also allows the ministry to see how and if the funds from the October 2013 Urgent Issues Action Fund are making a difference.

All of the reports and a summary can be viewed online.

“It indicates for me that there is progress that’s being made,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan told the media.

“That being said, I think what I’ve said right from the beginning is that these are some complex issues that we’re trying to face, that change isn’t going to happen overnight.”

Duncan stressed the importance of these tours, saying it’s vital to have the health region CEOs visit people on the front line who are directly impacted by the decisions they make.

“As long as I’m in this position, I think our CEOs and our senior leaders will continue to do these tours and will be seen on the front lines in the facilities to see first-hand what’s working well and what’s not working well.”

Tours of the facilities for 2015 are already underway.
