Mustangs advance to RBC Cup

May 2, 2015 | 5:16 PM

The Melfort Mustangs, including their nine Prince Albert Mintos alumni, qualified for the RBC Cup national Junior A tournament on Saturday at the Western Canada Cup in Fort McMurray.

They beat the hosting Fort McMurray Oil Barons 4-2 on Saturday in their first playoff game to advance into the top three spots in the tournament. The Oil Barons defeated the Mustangs on Thursday in a 3-2 overtime game.

The Western Canada Cup tournament usually promotes two teams through to the nationals, but since the second seeded Portage Terriers are already hosting the RBC Cup, that means the Mustangs will at the very least be the second West team in the tournament.

Prince Albert product Adam Fauchoux had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs in the victory. Fellow Mintos alumnus Justin Boyer, from St. Louis, had a pair of helpers.
