Raiders beat Oil Kings for second straight win

Mar 11, 2011 | 8:43 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2 on Friday night at the Art Hauser Centre to beat the Oil Kings at home for the first time since 2008.

The Oil Kings opened the scoring at 5:52 into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived when three minutes later Austin Conner was able to tap in a Justin Maylan pass past Oil King goaltender Jon Groenheyde to tie the game at 1.

The Oil Kings would score before the period was out to take a 2-1 lead into the second.

The Raiders though, took over from there. Riding some highlight reel saves by goaltender Jamie Tucker, who played in his first game since February the 5th, the Raiders scored three goals in a span of seven minutes in the second to take a 4-2 lead into the third.

Edmonton wasn’t able to beat Tucker on any of their 12 third period shots and Brandon Herrod scored a late shorthanded empty net goal to give the Raiders the 5-2 victory.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes also notched a victory tonight with a 3-2 win over the Calgary Hitmen. The Raiders remain two points up on the Hurricanes for the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes earned a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen and stay within two points of the Raiders for the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
