Former Saskatoon Hilltop signs with Seahawks

A former Saskatoon Hilltop gets another chance to crack an NFL roster this season after a brief stint with the St. Louis Rams in 2013 ended short of a regular season game.

24-year-old long-snapper Jorgen Hus said he had to call his dad just before his deal was done with the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. He was brougt to Seattle for a tryout and testing stint before signing a three-year pact with the team.

“I had to call my dad to get my American social security number,” Hus said. “By then my family knew and I called my trainer next.”

Hus said this spring camp is a better situation than last year with the Rams.

“The toughest part isn't being the new guy, it's about breaking the trust barrier, those three guys (in St. Louis), they are all each other's best friends and they have a good thing going and the longer I was there the more I realized it,” Hus said from his home in Saskatoon.

“So this time it’s more about going to the right situation and I think in Seattle it's a better situation and I think we have a better chance. I knew if I could get a workout with the team I knew I'd take care of the rest and impress them enough to ink a deal.”

Hus said he also has a close friend already on the team, Regina product and punter Jon Ryan.

“I know he's always putting in a good word for me wherever and whenever he can but he's always in our corner for us,” Hus said about Ryan.

Trying to learn from his time with St. Louis, Hus said he’s already getting a different vibe from the coaching and management staff. He feels they believe in him and he doesn’t want to disappoint.

“What better situation could a guy ask to walk in on?” Hus said. “I got to meet Pete Carroll and the general managers. They are great guys, real genuine guys. You're not nervous or anything and it makes it pretty easy.”

Going into mini-camps in two weeks, Hus will be competing for the starting role with Clint Gresham, who is on contract until the end of the season.

“The best man is going to win and with me, I have the ability to get downfield and make tackles and the co-ordinator agreed and that's why they wanted to get me there.”

Hus’ talent first went viral online with a Trick-Shot Long-Snapping video he shot with his brother.

“I did that at least three years ago and when the whole St. Louis thing came up last year that's when that video came out and got popular,” he said, admitting many of them took more than a couple of attempts before success.

“The one off the roof was the most difficult one because it was pretty windy that day and I was aiming three to four yards left of the bucket and it took 26 tries.”
