Mann Art Gallery moves closer to goal

Sep 19, 2013 | 6:19 AM

Prince Albert’s Mann Art Gallery is one step closer to acquiring a unique statue.

Thanks to a grant, April Sutherland, registrar for the gallery, said they are now more than halfway to their goal of purchasing a six-foot bronze wolf statue.

The plan is to place the bronze wolf statue at the bottom of the Diefenbaker Bridge.

The artist, Joe Fafard, is a well-known Saskatchewan sculptor famous for his large representations of animals.

And thanks to the Visual Arts Acquisition Grant, Sutherland said the gallery was able to receive $30,000.

She said they have raised $80,000 so far. “We want [to raise] $153,000 and that pays for the wolf, the taxes, the plaque … and our expenses.”

She said a portion of the money will also be used to host a welcoming party for the statue once a date has been set for its arrival.

Sutherland said they applied for the acquisition grant because the wolf will be a part of the Mann Gallery’s permanent collection.

“We’ve known about [the grant] for a few years. You can apply and you can get up to $30,000 a year but you have to apply every year. And it’s got to be for a specific piece, it has to be an artist that they feel is worth the investment.

So we got $30,000 from them which gave us a good shot in the arm we needed,” Sutherland said.

“So we’re over half way there.”

But right now, they’re working on the Wolf Cub kits for the kids, which includes an activity book, little wolf ears, and paws with claws, she said.

“We are hoping to have [the kits] available for Tapestrama and for Ever Green and of course we will be selling them out of the gallery as well.”

The kits will only be $20 and Tapestrama is at the end of the month.

The gallery is already planning another Wolf Back a Beer event on March 28 at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre.
